In the aftermath of Katrina I’m just baffled at the chaos. You’d think we could do better.
The one tiny bit of consolation I have is the way churches and ministries are responding. Like the tsunami earlier this year, churches are stepping in. While it’s odd to think of this in marketing terms, it’s so good to see the church backing our words with action.
CT’s weblog covers some of the church response, including:
- The Salvation Army preparing to feed some 420,000 people.
- The Southern Baptist Convention is preparing to feed 300,000 per day, ship in 30,000 volunteers, and coordinate nearly 600 disaster relief units owned by churches.
- The Louisiana Baptist Convention has 1,200 trained volunteers who hoped to arrive today.
- The United Methodist District is calling for “flood buckets,” 5-gallon containers full of cleaning supplies to go in during the recovery.
- A BP News story mentions 16 different churches housing refugees.
- World Relief is enabling churches to become safe havens for the refugees, providing whatever supplies are needed.
- Samaritan’s Purse has disaster relief trucks heading to the area and is coordinating volunteers.
- Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge, La. has become its own relief center.
And the list goes on. If you’d like to help you can donate to any organization listed above or the Red Cross. Let’s just pray the relief comes quickly.

just a note – 100% of money donated thru namb (southern baptist) goes to katrina victims – no administrative costs are taken out.

Hey i work closely with a ministry in Shreveport,LA which is one of the main places evacuees are planing to spend the next six to 8 weeks. We have had talks with everyone we can and really all they need is something to do, so we are going to be giving all the time we can playing with kids and setting up sports event and stuff to keep them occupied. If your interested in helping contact someone at LSUS and ask when Clear ministries is going to be available.
