The fall season finds just about every church ramping up. It can get a little crazy with new initiatives launching, old ministries clamoring for attention and then stuff keeps happening outside the church. How do you keep up? How do you stay sane? How do you survive the fall?
We’ve got a couple tips:
1. Go Back to the Basics.
Focus on the fundamentals of communication:
- Remember to ask why before what.
- Shift the conversation from “Look at us” to “Let’s talk about you.”
- “Wow, those announcements were powerful today,” said no one ever. Are you sharing information or inspiration?
- Make sure you have a content system in place.
- Consider doing an audit of your communication channels.
- Make sure you have a clear process for handling communication requests.
- Implement some simple tools to keep things organized.
2. Propose Cutting Back
Let’s be real: You can’t do everything. Sometimes you need to cut back.
If that’s the situation you find yourself in, then one strategy is to go to your leadership with a list of everything that needs to happen in the next six to eight weeks and ask what you can cut. If it’s just not possible to get that entire list done, then something has to give.
When Gerry True did that, his pastor suggested they hire another person. There’s a solution that will make you smile!
We won’t all get that reaction, but sometimes quitting something is the best way to survive. Embrace the restrictions.
