More About This Episode
We know how we use social media for ourselves, but what should social media look like when a church uses it? While it’s typical for church culture to slowly adapt to new mediums and modes of communication, it is also typical that social media networks, protocols and trends change on a month to month basis.
The Internet is changing our world at such a rapid pace that one mainstream college has even considered getting rid of the four-year degree. What good is a degree if six months into the education process the information being taught is outdated?
With churches cautious about new technology, limited on budget, slow to adopt trends and unclear on what their organizations role in social media is… what is a church to do?
In this episode we take a look at how churches can overcome the challenges of their individual organization culture, budgetary restrictions and man hour limits in order to add meaningful contributions to social media. Dave even finds a way to work a mad men quote into the conversation
Our Guest
Darrel Girardier is the digital strategy director for Brentwood Baptist Church in Brentwood, Tenn. Darrel has spent many years leading teams in crafting content for over 30 different events with over 400,000 annual attendance between them all. He has put together content for authors such as David Platt, Beth Moore, Jon Acuff, Matt Chandler and Prascilla Shirer. In 2013 he joined the Brentwood Baptist team in his current role.
Earlier in the century, churches could publish content online to share their thoughts and content with the world. With the rise of social media, Darrel is fascinated that not only can organizations share their thoughts, but also that the world can actually respond to those thoughts.

What a packed episode. Some very relevant, insightful stuff in here. As Darrel suggested, I took a step back this week from my own views on any given social platform and tried something new. Expanded our church’s social reach to Instagram and began trying to inherit the “storytelling” format with photos. Already seeing increased engagement through this. Keep up the great work with the podcast. Oh, and thanks for the shout out:)

I own a PR firm and my church, The Park Church, is a client. One of the services I provide is management of their overall communications which includes digital communications. I learned a lot from the social media episode. Some I knew, but a lot was reinforced and definitely reenergized me in pushing forward. Looking forward to sharing with my client/pastor and senior leadership. Thank you.

Jeremiah, Thanks so much for sharing! Any particular posts or content that was a real “rock star” piece of content?
Monica, thank you for sharing your story! What do you see as the number one way a church can contribute value to the space of Facebook?

Andrew, thanks so much. I never knew how much time and effort show notes would take to put together, but it is definitely worth it. I’m a podcast listener too and I love it when I can find exactly what I need in the notes!
Oh, and thank you for leaving a comment too!
