We have a success story of sorts over in the discussion area of the Church Marketing Lab. User dorothea_holcomb posted a tagline her church was considering and she didn’t think would work. With the help of some folks in the lab she was able to convince her church not to use the tagline. Helping the church not suck–that’s what we’re all about.
But now they want her to come up with a tagline that does work. Head over and help dorothea_holcomb process what a church tagline should be and help her get her church on the road to growth and changing their community!

Part of the problem from the lab post is that it reads like a demographic report combined with sales goals.
Perhaps if we had an idea of the purpose and personality of the congregation, it’s be a bit easier to come up with an effective tagline that reaches out to others who’d want to join such a community.
I guess it is the difference between an invitational tagline and a sales pitch tagline.

It’d probably help to hear that in the Lab–why don’t you head over there and make that suggestion?
And part of what dorothea-holcomb is asking is how do you write a tagline for a church. Advice like being invitational vs. giving a sales pitch would probably be helpful.

Last night at my small group we were talking about people we knew who because of bad previous experiences were not intersted in church. Out of that we came up with a new tag line. Since I doubt our church will go for it, it’s fair game…
Tired of organized religion?
XYZ Church – Unorganized religion.

So, uhm… what you’re offering is the religion – right (based on your tagline)?
My suggestion:
XYZ Church:
No Organizations – Simply Church
