Last week 20 missionaries served 15 churches at part of Creative Missions. They helped create websites, set up social media accounts, shot video, and more. But all that work starts with communication strategy.
We want to share a taste of Creative Missions with this free church communication strategy guide:
7 Steps to Evaluate Your Communication Strategy
For the past eight years, I have been a part of a project called Creative Missions. Many churches participate in and support traditional missionaries and mission trips where individuals travel outside their community to serve, evangelize, and encourage people living in other cultures.
Similarly, Creative Missions empowers media professionals from around the country to provide free training and creative resources to under-resourced churches in need of communication and media assistance. Over the eight years, I’ve been able to help 24 churches around the country (and Canada!) develop marketing plans, create new websites, design logos, and much more. Some of them have been church startups or new church plants, while others were simply looking to more effectively maximize their impact in their community.
A critical part of this process is an initial consultation that we run with each church. The session typically involves the lead pastor and other key leaders. I instruct my teams to listen well, take a lot of notes, and ask a lot of questions.
Maybe your church is already established. Maybe you already have a working website and attractive logo, and you probably have some sort of communication strategy and plan that outlines your rules and procedures. However, no matter how long your church has been around or how long you’ve been on staff, I’ve found that these same seven assessment questions can provide a helpful tune-up for church communicators. If it’s been a while since you’ve established or re-evaluated your communication strategy, gather your pastor and your team and consider these seven steps.

- See what last year’s trip accomplished: “Praise God for Creative Missions!” said Dustin Connor, the lead planter at Hope Church Calgary about last year’s Creative Missions trip. “Everything I just saw is what I’ve been asking God for. It’s not what I’ve been looking for; it’s way beyond that.”
