Thanksgiving: Chaos to Calm

Thanksgiving: Chaos to Calm

November 24, 2014 by

This is a busy time of year in the church.

Design the Christmas series graphics. Order the Christmas invite cards. Print the weekend bulletin before the office closes early for Thanksgiving. Submit Christmas service ad to the local newspaper. Upload Christmas service times slide to the website homepage. Change the cover photo on Facebook to the Christmas series.

What about thawing the turkey in time for Thanksgiving? Ahhh!

Take a deep breath.

That’s better.

Let God Move

Ask God to work in the lives of those who come to your church for the first time.

As a church communicator, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of Christmas promo. We feel the pressure of putting our A-game together so that first-time guests have the best possible experience with God.

Here’s a novel idea: let God move in the life of that person.

It’s not about how awesome the graphics are for your Christmas services or all the promotion you’ve done for the event. Sure, those things may attract someone to your church, but that’s not what brings them closer to God.

So there’s no reason to take on that burden. Instead, ask God to work in the lives of those who come to your church for the first time. Let him do his thing! Consider God your ultimate volunteer.

Lost Without Them

Don’t let your busy schedule keep you from thanking your volunteers.

Think about all of the people who come around you to help make your church’s communications department a success. What would you do without your Facebook savant? Or how about your graphic designer who makes the sermon series come to life? Or what about the office personnel who’ve got your back?

Don’t let your busy schedule keep you from thanking your volunteers. Send your volunteers a quick text message reminding them how thankful you are for their dedication.

Sure, society says that a written note is the ideal way to show your appreciation—and more power to you if you have the energy to write to all of your volunteers—but a quick text can be just as powerful.

From Chaos To Calm

Prayerfully thank God for everything he’s done and ask him to take on your communications burdens.

Don’t let Thanksgiving be just a blip on the calendar. If you’re feeling frazzled this Thanksgiving week from the Christmas promotional chaos, you don’t have to burn incense and listen to Enya to relax.

Prayerfully thank God for everything he’s done and ask him to take on your communications burdens. He can move in ways far bigger than your church communication department can with an endless budget.

There, see how much better it feels when we let God do his thing? Relax and enjoy your abuela’s homemade noodles.

How will you “chill” in the midst of the Christmas chaos this Thanksgiving week?
